Middle Level Commissioners Proposed Phased Maintenance Dredging 2022
Phase VII – Mullicourt Aqueduct, Outwell to Nordelph Village
To confirm, that the Middle Level Commissioners’ intend to undertake
the seventh phase of channel dredging works, to remove siltation and sediment from the Well Creek. As I know you will already be aware the Well Creek forms part of the vital navigation route, known as the ‘MLC Link Route’, that facilitates up to 1000 boat passages per annum to navigate between the Nene and Ouse Rivers.
The latest proposed dredging phase follows on from the successful completion of six previous phases which have been undertaken since 2014 throughout the villages of Upwell, Outwell and Nordelph. The latest phase is programmed to commence in the New Year (2022). The extent of the works will be from Mullicourt Aqueduct Outwell to Nordelph Village.
The majority of the resultant dredged material will be deposited along agricultural land to the south west side of the water channel. There are a couple of short lengths where disposal of dredgings to bankside will not be possible, and this material will be carted away from site.
The proposed works will not necessitate a navigation closure of Well Creek on this occasion.
The duration of the works will be totally dependent on weather, ground and river conditions during that time. Should the Well Creek freeze over dredging work will cease, to allow for Fen Skating to take place.
A local dredging contractor, B J Plant Hire Ltd, has been appointed to undertake the works.
